1. Write Unique Meta Descriptions for Each Page
Google loves unique meta descriptions.
This is what the company says about good meta descriptions:
“Wherever possible, create descriptions that accurately describe the specific page. Use site-level descriptions on the main home page or other aggregation pages, and use page-level descriptions everywhere else.”
Having unique meta descriptions is even more important for all the critical pages on your website, such as the home page, category pages, product pages, and top performing blog posts.
So be sure to put some effort into creating a unique meta description for each page.
2. Use Action-Oriented Copy
You should treat each meta description as a call-to-action. Try to use action-oriented language in your meta description which informs the user what they can expect by visiting your page. Consider using proven CTA words such as “explore”, “discover”, “get started”, or “sign up free”.

3. Use Your Focus Keywords
Make sure your meta description includes focus keywords for that page. Use keywords that are relevant to your page’s content, but ensure that you don’t stuff your meta description with keywords. Use just the right amount of keywords and aim at persuading the user to click on the link.
Here’s a meta description example from Moz that leverages the focus keywords – “link building tips”:

If your meta description doesn’t align with your page’s content, then Google will be forced to use the first sentence with the keyword in the meta description column. Such meta descriptions are often out of context and do nothing to improve your CTR.
4. Leverage the (New) Character Limit
For a long time, the SEO best practice was to keep your meta descriptions within 156 characters. All that changed when Google announced the new character limit for snippets and meta descriptions. Now the recommended length for a meta description is between 300-320 characters.
This change doesn’t mean you need to revisit your old posts and change meta descriptions. Sometimes, shorter meta descriptions make more sense than longer ones.
But just be cognizant of the new limit while writing your meta descriptions to take full advantage of it wherever necessary.
5. Copy PPC ads
Most advertisers optimize their PPC ads for maximum clicks. So it goes without saying that you can learn a lot by taking a look at your competitors’ PPC ads.

  • Get Authority Backlinks
You know, without backlinks, it’s impossible to rank on first page search results.

AdBrite is probably the best known alternative to Adsense. All in all it is a huge network that takes some exploring to find the right speed, but it is proven to be profitable in the end. They will work with ALL types of websites from every country and if your website has less than wholesome content, they also host Black Label Ads on the same network.

We mentioned above that Adbrite has inline text advertising. However if you are going to go this route, we have found better monetization and targeting from Kontera. The basic premise behind inline text advertising is that you put a snip of code on your page and it will determine the content of the page and highlights individual words and links them out on a CPC basis.

Kontera works across all countries and most types of English language content (no adult or warez etc…)  It is a good match for sites that are text heavy and need a small boost of monetization with little effort.

Other alternatives are SNAP which offer popup screen shots of outlinks with CPC ads, though has been criticized for being slightly annoying.

For those publishers with over 500k page views a month may also wish to check out Vibrant Media which is similar to Kontera and offers multi-language support and nice payouts.

Chitika
Chitika Premium is one of the coolest and most cleverest little tricks a network has come up with in a long time.   It is a snip of code you place on your page and whenever a user arrives at your site via a search engine, they display contextual CPC text ads.

Why this is cool is that most website publishers know that search engine traffic has very high bounce rates meaning that for your regular readers, they will not see the ads, however readers that come from search engines will get a big ad block in front of their face, with highly targeted CPC ads ready to be clicked.

This helps you to monetize your bouncing search engine traffic, while not alienating your loyal readers with excessive advertisements.

This is compatible with Adsense as it is technically not contextual and just taking the original search engine query to display the advert. The only drawback is that they will only display their ads to US traffic with other country support coming soon.

As a website publisher, the thing to remember that there is no magic bullet for instant success in monetization.  However, trying various methods and internal bucket testing, you will eventually find the result that brings you the best flow.
